Ahh, the final month of summer. When I used to teach and work in public schools, I dreaded summer flying by! As a student, I of course used to dread summer ending too. Summer was hands down my favorite time of the year.
However, since I now work year round (although it does definitely lighten up a ton in the summer) and I've lived in southern states for 10 years, the end of summer just hits different! Instead of dreading the end of those less stressful days, I'm ready to get the show on the road and get into slightly cooler weather. Virginia is hotter than it ever was in North Carolina, mainly because we are farther away from the water!
Suffice to say, August/September in the south are my least favorite months. It's hot, it's humid, it's still sunny constantly...and I just get over it! I'm so ready for it come March again though!
This Life Lately for August is probably my most boring to date, hah. I almost didn't even post. There really wasn't much going on. What with being homeless, furnitureless, carless for a week, and in a new state...there wasn't many exciting things to share...yet!
Nonetheless, here is a true and accurate representation of our life this past month...even with us living in this in-between that is not ideal by any means. I hope I can look back on these pictures and appreciate all that our future living situation has in store for us! This is definitely first world problems outlined in this post, so please take this all with a grain of salt.
The highlight of our month was finding an apartment to hold us over until our on-base house is ready! It's definitely a pretty area.
Our view isn't the prettiest, but all we cared about was an apartment with an external door that was on the first floor allowing us to let the dogs out easily. It's been MUCH easier with them than I anticipated! They've been surprisingly PERFECT. We (I) just are still making sure we tire them out with multiple walks, errands, and dog park trips. Otherwise, they don't even ask to go outside at all...it's like they know...because Lord believe me, they ask 9000000x to go in/out when they are at our house without the doggy door or at my parents' house.
We're loving the big fenced in patio that at least allows for some fresh air! For the past month, these two patio chairs that we bought are the only chairs we had...besides a camping chair. Basically, we spent as much time as possible out on the patio.
They look happy enough, don't they?!
Although some moments, Cash is like "Are you serious? What is going on here? You call this a yard?"
So our inside living situation looked like this...for a MONTH. How in the world did I survive being here all day, every day (with the exception of errands)? I'm not quite sure, to tell you the truth.
Shane's military-issued sleeping bag on the hardwood floor was sometimes our only comfort for the entire day. You guys!
I posted up in the camping chair for a bit each day or when it came time to work. Camping inside, I suppose.
We just had to smile and make the best of it...and buy another version of what we already have in storage of the bare necessities that we need.
Sometimes we all crammed on the air mattress...
...until the air mattress absolutely destroyed my hips, to the point where I had severe difficulty even moving enough to get dressed a few days. Ugh. I could slightly fix that by sleeping on the floor, so please note my very spacious floor bed....ummm. This night Cash also happened to throw up on my sleeping bag and on my blanket, so I think I slept with my pillow, a bathrobe, and a beach towel. This will be funny memories eventually, right?
I did love sleeping closer to my boy and getting nighttime snuggles with him when I was on the floor though!
So Shane has been wanting a new mattress for awhile. We figured now was the time. We bit the bullet (with some help from Shane's mom!) and got a new king-size Purple mattress, woo hoo!The most beautiful sight for my eyes to see at this point...
Although I'm not sure Shane and I really get much more space when we upgraded to this size, haha! Our mattress is on the floor until we get/Shane makes a new frame...but this is still very exciting news for us at this point in time lol.
We suffer, but they don't...Caylor got another new bed for her birthday and to give her comfort in this temporary situation. Anything that's Caylor's is also Cash's...he makes sure it stays that way.
We escaped the apt for a day to Shane's family friend's house near the mountains. It's about an hour away from us. This whole strip of land is their backyard! Can you see C&C sprinting all the way towards the end of it in the second pic?
I've been wanting to eat anything from the Instant Pot and anything easy. I've been having a moment with those chopped salad kits from the grocery store.
I'm loving making multiple-weekly trips to our nearby library!
We are surviving on daily or every other day trips to the dog park. There are always lots of huskies here...hmm, I wonder why. 😜
As I write this on Thursday 8/25, the movers came today for an hour to do a partial delivery of our stuff. YAY!!!!!!!!!!!! I mean, it's super crammed in here and they accidentally brought many things we didn't request, which is frustrating.
Just picture 10 bins of the least used items in your house/garage, and that's basically what we got in addition to some of the necessities we requested. I basically don't have any of my kitchen supplies (besides what we bought to replace), but I have a cowboy hat from 8 years ago, every other hat that was in my closet, all my swimsuits, all my winter gear, random office supply extras that I don't use, and old journals/photo albums from years ago...basically things I definitely do NOT currently need and NOT in a 1 bedroom apt! Part of the items were requested (if I wanted my other bedroom closet clothes, they just included everything from that closet), but some just happened to be packed in other boxes, and other items were definitely requested and have no reason for being here. Super frustrating, but we're making it work!
Also, we got our TV screen but not the stand or cord... so much for that.
We definitely have some organizing to do...but we have a COUCH! And a coffee table! We kept it to the bare minimum so that it will be easier to move again hopefully SOON, but it's sure nice to have some of our furniture.
I know this post has been pretty boring and dogs, dogs, dogs...so here's cute Brecken to finish off this blogpost! We always love the pics, videos, and Facetimes we get of our sweet nephew.
Hoping for more excitement in September and not another snoozeworthy post...
Here's to the unofficial start of fall, the return of productivity, and hopefully that transitional fall weather! Sending love to you on this Monday. I'll be back here tomorrow with my August Book Review and then a recap of a previous birthday trip on Wednesday!

I love the apartment - it looks so nice!! I’m impressed that C&C can actually have a dog bed - Olive has chewed up every one we’ve tried to buy… I think it’s part of her secret plan to sleep exclusively in our bed 😜 -SM
